Klosterman, one of the most well respected rock critics of his time with an enormous
following, was a senior writer for Spin and contributes as a featured columnist to Esquire
and has written for GQ, The New York Times Magazine and The Washington Post.
Klosterman is the author of five books, Fargo Rock City (2001), Sex, Drugs, and
Cocoa Puffs (2003), Killing Yourself to Live (2005), Chuck Klosterman IV (2006) and
Downtown Owl (2008).
Killing Yourself to Live expands on an article Klosterman wrote for Spin about driving
cross-country to visit several of America’s most famous rock and roll death sites, from
the Rhode Island club where more than 90 Great White fans died in a fire, to the Iowa
field where Buddy Holly’s plan crashed. The quest to uncover these deaths’ social
significance is quickly overwhelmed by Klosterman’s personal obsessions, especially
his agonizing over sexual relationships. A large part of the narrative rests on women
from Klosterman’s past and present who embody abstractions that he loves.
Bryan Goluboff will adapt.
